Deliveries of aluminium tubes and aerosol cans fall

Despite the environment, companies are reporting stable capacity utilisation overall.

The members of the Tubes, Cans and Extruded Parts Association in Aluminium Deutschland e. V. report a decline in deliveries to Germany in the first half of 2025. A total of 393 million aluminium tubes (- around 1 %) and 268 million aluminium aerosol cans (- 3.2 %) were delivered to domestic customers.

While the largest sales markets for aerosol cans grew - deodorants by 3 % and hair care by 1.3 % - the overall market was impacted by weaker demand in other cosmetics segments and in smaller markets such as food, pharmaceuticals and household products.

Relaxation on the labour market, continuing cost pressure

The labour shortage has decreased noticeably, partly because redundancies in the automotive industry have led more skilled workers into the packaging industry. At the same time, production costs for energy, logistics, regulation and raw materials remain high and are impacting the competitiveness of manufacturers. There is no short-term relief in sight.

Focus on US tariffs, limited direct effects

The newly introduced US tariffs of 50 % on empty aluminium cans and tubes are being monitored. The association expects only limited effects for most German producers, as the focus is on the German and European markets. However, individual companies that supply the USA on a smaller scale must expect additional hurdles.

Outlook: stable capacity utilisation, focus on internationalisation and sustainability

Despite the environment, the companies report stable capacity utilisation overall. The focus is on international business development and innovations in sustainable packaging solutions. „Against the backdrop of global trade barriers, geopolitical tensions and a weak European and German economy, the current business environment remains extremely challenging. Nevertheless, our members are proving their resilience, adapting to new regulatory requirements and continuing to ensure a reliable supply of aluminium tubes and aerosol cans for customers worldwide,“ says Johannes Schick, Chairman of the trade association.
