Emerald Packaging has partnered with Walmart, Idaho Package and Wada Farms to launch the first food-grade flexible packaging with 30 % post-consumer recyclate (PCR) for the US retail potato market.

The project was commercialised by Wada Farms in close cooperation with Walmart. The first tests with PCR potato pouches began in autumn 2024, followed by the market launch at the end of the year. According to those involved, a dozen items are now being produced with PCR resin. This has saved more than 45 tonnes of virgin polyethylene. Walmart is planning to switch further products in the root vegetable segment to PCR.

Sustainability as a common goal

According to Emerald Packaging CEO Kevin Kelly, post-consumer recyclate is for the first time a commercially viable solution that meets the needs of large retailers. The partnership with Walmart has made it possible to build the supply chain for PCR and implement its use on a large scale.

Walmart sees the launch as part of its commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. "We are proud to partner with Emerald Packaging, Idaho Package and Wada Farms to introduce the first PCR packaging for potatoes. This initiative directly supports our goal to reduce packaging waste," said Laura Himes, Vice President Produce Sourcing at Walmart.
