Henkel presents a new cold seal coating for barrier-coated paper. This development supports recyclability and product protection in the packaging sector.

The trend towards ‚paperisation‘ is becoming increasingly important in the packaging industry. With stricter regulatory requirements and a growing consumer interest in sustainable packaging, the switch from plastic to paper is a crucial issue. With the introduction of Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, Henkel has closed a technological gap by developing the first cold-seal solution specifically for barrier-coated paper packaging. It enables the process-safe production of recyclable packaging structures and is compatible with mechanical paper recycling - a decisive advantage with regard to current and future regulatory requirements. Its recyclability has been confirmed by an accredited institute.

The importance of recyclability

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the global trend towards greater sustainability are driving demand for recyclable packaging. According to a report by GlobalData, over 70 per cent of consumers worldwide consider recyclable packaging to be important or essential. This is where Henkel's new Cold-Seal solution comes in, making it possible to seal barrier-coated paper securely and without the use of heat. This is particularly beneficial for heat-sensitive products such as snacks, ice cream and chocolate, as the packaging protects the quality and flavour of the products.

The solution is part of the Henkel RE range; a product family of adhesives and coatings specifically developed for recycling-compatible packaging design and proven to support the recycling of packaging materials.

Possible applications and advantages

The new solution offers stable cold seal performance on a wide range of paper grammages and is able to tolerate typical paper migrants, avoiding process-related performance fluctuations. Especially in the snack, ice cream and confectionery industries, where packaging contents are sensitive to heat, cold seal technology is indispensable. As the seal is applied without heat, product quality and flavour are retained while the mechanical stress on the packaging material remains low. In combination with modern barrier systems, paper structures are created that are functional and compatible with recycling.

„With Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, we enable reliable cold-seal performance on barrier-coated paper and thus packaging solutions that meet both the requirements of the circular economy and the high demands for product protection and process reliability.“

Strategic importance for the future

With regard to the PPWR, recyclable paper packaging is becoming increasingly strategically important. Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE makes a direct contribution to this, as the cold-seal coating has been proven not to impair the recyclability of barrier-coated paper structures. For brand owners and their packaging manufacturers, this complete recyclability provides a resilient basis for meeting future regulatory requirements and realising high-performance and marketable packaging designs.
