Japanese snack manufacturer Calbee is temporarily adjusting the packaging design of several products due to supply shortages of certain raw materials. According to the company, the backdrop to this is geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which are affecting the supply of individual materials. A total of 14 product variants from the Potato Chips, Kappa Ebisen, and Frugra brands are affected.
Calbee announced that it will henceforth design the packaging of the affected products using only two printing inks. The change is intended to help maintain a stable supply of products. According to the company, the introduction of the modified packaging will begin gradually in shops from the week of 25th May 2026. Individual products from the Kataage Potato brand will follow from 22nd June 2026.
Simplified packaging for crisps and cereals
Among the affected products are various variants of Potato Chips in the flavours „Lightly Salted Taste“, „Consomme Punch“ and „Seaweed Salt Taste“, as well as Kappa Ebisen and Frugra. The products are distributed nationwide in Japan, with some having different packaging sizes for convenience stores and other retail outlets.
Calbee stressed that the adjustments exclusively concern the packaging design and will not affect product quality. The company also stated that it intends to continue responding flexibly to changes in the operating environment and geopolitical risks in order to ensure the supply of safe and high-quality products.
