Nature MultiPack™ is based on specially adapted adhesives that bond containers together to form multipacks. After testing the Nature MultiPack™, the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) has now concluded that it is fully recyclable.
The adhesive specially developed and supplied by NMP Systems and KHS was therefore given a Provisional authorisation for further market tests in Europe until 30 June 2019. The adhesive of the Nature MultiPack™ single-use packaging solution has no negative impact on the rPET. Further tests should enable permanent approval.
Adhesive dots in use
As a form of packaging for PET bottles that does not require visible film wrapping, Nature MultiPack™ attracted a lot of attention at its presentation. PET bottles are characterised by Adhesive dots connected to each other, so no film disturbs the view of the bottle. In 2016, the solution won the German Design Award for outstanding communication design and sustainable packaging. The considerable Material savings and practical handling distinguish the pack from all existing packaging variants. The provisional approval of the European PET Bottle Platform has now also been confirmed by an independent body that the specially developed adhesive for the glue dots on the bottles has no negative impact on the quality of the recycled PET in the tests.
The tests showed that the adhesive dots detach as intended due to the friction during the washing process. The adhesive then separates from the PET flakes as it floats on the surface of the cleaning medium. The provisional approval is valid until 30 June 2019. Further tests, at the end of which permanent approval will be granted, will follow in the coming months.
[infotext icon]The EPBP is a voluntary, industry-based initiative that provides, among other things, ET bottle design guidelines for recycling. It evaluates new PET bottle packaging solutions and technologies in terms of their impact on the recycling process and tests and certifies them according to strict guidelines. It thus supports the European PET value chain in terms of economic and environmental sustainability.
