Sappi makes an active contribution to the circular economy

Sappi's collaboration with packaging supplier Constantia Flexibles has resulted in sustainable packaging solutions made from recyclable paper.

Demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable paper-based packaging solutions is increasing worldwide. Sappi is making great strides in developing innovative proprietary barrier paper technologies to offer new ways to meet this demand.

This enabled Sappi to support the world's largest food and beverage company - Nestlé - in the launch of the YES! snack bar in a Packaging made from recyclable paper support: The paper manufacturer worked closely with Nestlé and packaging supplier Constantia Flexibles to develop solutions suitable for recyclable paper manufacturing processes.

„Sappi is working with leading branded goods manufacturers to develop renewable paper-based packaging solutions. These solutions must fulfil the requirements for recyclability of the packaging without compromising on food protection and shelf life. One example of this is the new Sappi Guard product line. It offers branded confectionery manufacturers paper-based packaging that meets the market demand for more sustainable products.“

The acquisition of the barrier film technology company Rockwell Solutions Limited (Rockwell Solutions) from Dundee, Scotland, in 2017 enabled Sappi to expand its product range to include recyclable barrier coatings.

The importance of the project also emphasises Stefan Grote, Executive Vice President Consumer at Constantia Flexibles, emphasised: „With our latest innovation, we have clearly demonstrated our expertise in paper-based packaging solutions that ensure high product quality and freshness throughout the entire shelf life. This is an important step towards more sustainable products that could revolutionise the packaging of confectionery.“
