Signature Pack from SIG, the world's first aluminium-free aseptic carton pack linked to plant-based, renewable raw materials via a mass balance system to 100%, has won the prestigious French Packaging Award in the „Environment“ category.
The cardboard packaging was replaced at the beginning of the year with Candia, part of the French dairy co-operative Sodiaal, was launched on the French market. The award recognises SIG's commitment to developing packaging innovations that add value for consumers and the beverage industry, as well as Candia's leading role in developing innovative solutions in the consumer milk sector.
„Receiving this Packaging Award for the new ecological carton packaging of our organic milk is a great honour for Candia and a recognition for our teams and farmers. This packaging award is the result of the collaboration with our partner SIG to launch this innovation for our customers and consumers. Since this summer, we have been offering a new organic UHT milk - packaged in a carton that no longer contains aluminium and contributes to the development of a supply chain for wood-based polymers through a certified mass balance system. All with the aim of gradually reducing the consumption of fossil resources. This is a concrete solution for consumers looking for products in more environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging,“ says Laura Garrot, CSR Manager at Candia.
SIG carton packs consist mainly of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified raw cardboard, which is obtained from the renewable raw material wood. The polymers that make up the rest of the packaging (protective layers and the closure) are bonded via a Certified mass balance system with renewable wood-based materials. This means that for the polymers used in the Signature Pack, a corresponding amount of bio-based raw materials has been used in the production of the polymers.
„We are proud to receive this important award in the environmental category together with our customer Candia. Our aluminium-free cartonboard packaging is not linked to agricultural crops, but to a by-product from the paper industry, known as tall oil, which is used as a vegetable raw material in the production of the polymers. This avoids having to use land and resources that could be used for food production. Together with Candia, the launch of the Signature Pack makes us a real role model in the French dairy market when it comes to our commitment to the environment,“ explains Melanie Revolte, Marketing Manager France at SIG.
