Once again this year, the association of cartonboard and folding carton manufacturers Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Association (ECMA) have honoured the best carton packaging. We show you the winners of the European Carton Excellence Awards
Carton of the year: Roku Gin
The Roku Gin packaging was designed by Van Genechten Packaging made of cardboard from Stora Enso and won the Carton of the Year award for its aesthetic design with great printing, the quality of the finish and the way it successfully communicates the product's backstory. The six corners of the gift box symbolise the six Japanese plant extracts used to make Roku - a term meaning „six“ in Japanese - while the embossing and floral print express traditional Japanese courtesy. The packaging guarantees both excellent visibility and protection for the product, while at the same time informing the consumer and enticing them to buy.
Innovation of the year: Re-Fruiter Tray
The „Innovation“ award went to Snel BVs Re-Fruiter Tray made of cardboard from Smurfit Kappa Hoya paper and board. This clever packaging consists of a grid-like tray that has a die-cut profile with a pattern of angled elements that are joined together to form a flexible surface. The recyclable packaging protects soft fruit during transport and eliminates the need for plastic trays and bubble wrap.
„Save The Planet“ winner: Eco Fit Lid

The jury agreed on the Seda International Packaging Group-Creation Eco Fit Lid as a worthy Save the Planet Winner. The cardboard lid uses Stora Ensos new carton manufacturing technology, is perfect for hot and cold drinks and ensures safe drinking. The product is fully recyclable and compostable, making it the ultimate sustainable alternative to the plastic lids commonly used in fast food outlets.
Food and beverages: Fresh fibre

Cadpack won the „Food and Beverages - Fresh Fibre“ category with its Korpikuusikkon Honey gift packaging made of Metsä Board Materials. The luxury packaging enriches the customer experience with its tactile surface and print effects that invite consumers to touch and feel.
Food and beverages: recycled fibre
Alzamora Carton Packaging won the „Food and Beverages - Recycled Fibre“ category with its Enovo cardboard packaging from Baden Board. This clear packaging consists of a base and a lid made of cellulose and uses a minimum amount of material, but still has a very high-quality appearance. It offers a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic egg packaging as it is made from recycled fibres and is both recyclable and biodegradable.
General packaging - virgin fibre
Nobleman and Stora Ensos ISANA Cosmetics won the „General Packaging - Fresh Fibre“ category for its textured design and sophisticated finish. The appealing graphics and embossing are complemented by an elaborate top closure, which gives this packaging an extremely eye-catching and luxurious touch and is intended to reflect the contents inside.
Audience Award: KeelClip

Most recently, Graphic Packaging International's KeelClip creation was recognised as a worthy winner of the Public Award. This is a sustainable cardboard packaging for multipack cans designed to replace traditional plastic rings, which are harmful to nature. In addition to this environmental benefit, KeelClip™ also offers excellent handling and practical storage options.
