IPV: Crisis emphasises the importance of the industry

The companies organised in the Industrial Association for Paper and Film Packaging (IPV) are experiencing strong demand for paper packaging. However, polymer-based monomaterials are also currently in demand.

The trend towards paper packaging continues. However, the companies organised in the Industrial Association for Paper and Film Packaging (IPV) are not only experiencing strong demand for fibre-based packaging. Polymer-based monomaterials are also currently in demand.

Appreciation for packaging that protects food and extends shelf life has been on the rise again since the coronavirus pandemic. „The acceptance and future of flexible packaging is more important than ever. recyclability and the intelligent and sustainable choice of suitable materials be decisive. With additional scientific studies, the IPV This is where we need to start and work out and substantiate the good arguments in favour of flexible packaging as product protection vis-à-vis politicians and consumers,“ says IPV Chairman of the Board Klaus Jahn.

Focus on recyclability of packaging according to IPV

A major challenge lies in the steadily growing number of substitute materials with the associated advantages and disadvantages. The trend towards paper packaging as a replacement for plastic continues and is gaining additional momentum during the coronavirus pandemic. Not only is the development of alternative fibre-based products being driven forward by various players, but research has also made progress in the barrier protection function of paper, among other things. In this year's annual survey, the majority of IPV member companies also stated that customer demand for fibre-based substitute products has risen sharply or even very sharply.

In contrast, the use of polymer-based films is also making great strides in development. Here the trend towards monomaterials to improve recyclability strongly in the foreground. The IPV will therefore continue to devote particular attention to the recyclability of flexible packaging in the 2020/2021 financial year.

„The increase in system participation rates in the area of the Packaging Act, the positive developments in recyclability, the renewed increase in confidence in the benefits of packaging - all of this We see this as a very positive development. Nevertheless, the bureaucratic burden and massive political intervention in the market, such as product bans, continue to threaten small and medium-sized companies in our industry in particular. Decision-makers urgently need to be made more aware of this.“ Karsten Hunger, IPV Managing Director

In a survey, around 60 per cent of the companies in the Industrial Association for Paper and Film Packaging (IPV) also stated that the lockdown has had a negative impact on sales or sales expectations.
