The German Aluminium Industry Association is cautiously positive about 2020 for aluminium packaging. A sustained market recovery is not expected until the second half of 2021.
The members of the Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie e. V. (GDA) organised manufacturers of aluminium tubes and aerosol cans reported a balance of around one per cent for the past year. only a slight decline in demand for aluminium tubes. Good demand from the pharmaceutical and food sectors almost made up for the decline in cosmetic products.
Deliveries of aluminium aerosol cans to Germany fell significantly by around nine percent due to lower sales in the core market of deodorants. This was also due to the Significant increase in demand for disinfectants in the first quarter of 2020. Nevertheless, the overall result compared to other customer markets in the aluminium industry in 2020 is still still moderate from.
„Due to the ongoing pandemic, the slow start to vaccinations and the associated restrictions for the population in Germany and across Europe, we are expecting to see an increase in vaccinations by the middle of the year. market situation remains difficult because customers are planning carefully and driving on sight.“ Johannes Schick, Chairman of the GDA Tubes, Cans and Impact Extrusions Association
Demand from the cosmetics market in particular is expected to be affected. The market continues to suffer from coronavirus protection measures: Shops are closed at least until mid-February and other important sales channels such as duty-free shops in airports are also currently cancelled. The association only expects from the third quarter of 2021 with a sustained recovery in the market.. No concrete forecasts will be made until then.
Aluminium packaging
What is clear, however, is that the topic Recyclability of packaging remains the focus in 2021. Here, the association proudly refers to the Potential of aluminium packaging, which can be recycled almost indefinitely without any loss of quality. The current recycling rate for aluminium packaging in Germany is 93.2%.

Aluminium packaging currently only accounts for around one per cent of total packaging consumption in Germany, which is why we see Significant growth potential in the German packaging market. This is because aluminium packaging provides a good protective function that efficiently prevents product spoilage and loss. The association points out that it provides a „convincing overall ecological package“ that is fully in line with the EU Commission's Green Deal programme for greater resource efficiency and sustainability.
