Nutri-Score: frozen food industry draws positive interim balance

On the occasion of World Consumer Day and European Consumer Day on 15 March, the German Frozen Food Institute (dti) draws a first, positive interim balance on the introduction of the Nutri-Score in Germany.

On the occasion of World Consumer Day and European Consumer Day on 15 March, the German Frozen Food Institute (dti) draws a first, positive interim balance on the introduction of the Nutri-Score in Germany.

However, there is still a need for education, according to the association. In a recent consumer survey, 18 per cent stated that they were unable to assess the Nutri-Score as a decision-making criterion for nutrition. At the same time, a quarter of those surveyed said that the Nutri-Score as a decision criterion is important or very important.

Frozen food industry pioneers the introduction of the Nutri-Score

Just over a year ago, the first people with the Nutri-Score labelled frozen products on the market, even though the regulation for extended nutrition labelling only came into force in autumn 2020.

The Nutri-Score is particularly useful for the assessment of convenience foods. good orientationto be able to categorise the complex nutrient composition faster and better.

However, a diet based solely on foods in the Nutri-Score category is far from balanced: Because a varied and healthy diet includes many different foods in the right proportions. The recommendations of the German Nutrition Society can help here. Nutri-Score and nutritional recommendations complement each other and thus support consumers in maintaining a balanced diet.

In the short time since the official introduction of the Nutri-Score, a number of more than 100 companies with over 200 brands registered. Important frozen food brands from leading manufacturers and Europe's largest home service provider were involved from the outset. The retail brands now complement the Nutri-Score-labelled range in the frozen food department and already offer better orientation for a large number of products thanks to the new nutritional value label.
