A new polyolefin (PO) sleeve from Nyco Flexible Packaging has been awarded the „Made for Recycling“ certificate with top marks. The assessment was based on a three-stage test methodology developed by Interseroh Dienststleistungs GmbH together with the bifa Umweltinstitut.

The PO-Sleeve was tested in combination with a PP cup and a transparent PET bottle. It achieved the highest score in all evaluation criteria. It was tested for its suitability for the collection system, the sortability of the packaging and its suitability for material recycling and the provision of secondary products. The sleeve can be used in conjunction with polypropylene containers as Monomaterial solution or can be reused in combination with transparent PET bottles in the recycling process. Separate cleanly. Packaging in this composition may in future bear the label Made for recycling wear.

„Sleeves are a popular design tool in the packaging sector. They can be easily recycled if the overall packaging is easy to sort. We were able to confirm this with the composition chosen by Nyco.“ Julian Thielen, packaging engineer at Made for Recycling

Nyco PO-Sleeve scores

In order to assess the recyclability of packaging, the bifa Umweltinstitut and Interseroh have developed a three-stage points system developed. In the first stage, it is determined whether the consumer can easily assign the packaging to the correct collection system. The second stage then examines how the packaging behaves during sorting. Can the currently available sorting technologies sort the packaging into the correct material fraction - or do certain materials prevent clear categorisation? The third stage examines whether the packaging is suitable for material recycling or whether, for example, labels, closures or barriers make recycling more difficult.

The more points the packaging achieves on a scale of 0 to 20, the more completely it can be recycled. The service also fulfils Made for recycling the requirements of the applicable Minimum standards for assessing the recyclability of packaging of the Stiftung Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (ZSVR). The methodology was finally reviewed by experts from the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV and is based on the sorting and recycling technology used in Germany.
