In a joint long-term project, Metsä Board and The Paper Lid Company have developed a beverage cup made from 100 per cent recyclable paperboard for both hot and cold drinks. The lid of the disposable cup is also made from a fully recyclable dispersion barrier board and is suitable for both hot and cold drinks.
The lid is produced by Finnish start-up The Paper Lid Company using a new technical process that allows the material to be moulded into the desired shape. The result is a one-piece cardboard lid that sits firmly on the cup and offers similar performance characteristics to a conventional plastic lid.
„Reducing plastic waste is a particularly important issue for us and our environment. Together with our partners, we are constantly developing and testing new, innovative solutions that centre around the idea of a circular economy,” explains Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director EMEA and APAC at Metsä Board, a Metsä Group company. „The Cardboard ceilingl is an excellent example of just such a solution.“
Recyclable cardboard lid goes into series production
The founder of the Paper Lid Company, Matti Salonoja, adds that the company has been working for many years to produce a cardboard lid that is 100 per cent recyclable. The company has now created the technical conditions at its production site in Masku, southern Finland, to be able to enter the recycling market. Series production to go. According to the company, the ecological footprint of the new cardboard solution is less than half that of a plastic lid.

„I am delighted that we can now bring this solution to the market,” says Salonoja. „Cardboard made from renewable virgin fibres is an inherently sustainable raw material. By combining our expertise with that of Metsä Board, we have been able to develop an innovative solution that we believe will be a game changer for our customers. Enormous potential for change for the disposable cup market.”
