For the safe transport of 3D printers from the start-up Kumovis, Thimm Packaging Systems has developed packaging made from RhinoPlate, a four-wall corrugated board suitable for the transport of heavy goods - an alternative to conventional wooden outer packaging.

Transporting sensitive technical devices safely requires precisely customised transport packaging that offers optimum protection and can withstand all transport conditions. For Kumovis, a Munich-based start-up that manufactures 3D printers for the production of medical products, the developers at Thimm Packaging Systems designed such packaging. With this Transport packaging for the 3D printer weighing around 500 kg the wooden outer packaging has been replaced by a sustainable solution made of sturdy, four-wall corrugated cardboard, which is ideal for transporting heavy goods: RhinoPlate.

The transport packaging is delivered flat and space-saving. The set consists of a custom-sized pallet, wooden fixing elements, a lid and two RhinoPlate rings with locking system. The design makes it easier to set up the packaging and place the heavy printer: thanks to its stability, the lid also acts as a ramp, allowing the sensitive device to be placed on the pallet without any lifting effort.

The wooden elements, which are covered with PE foam on the inside to protect them from scratches, are attached to the pallet against the device and serve as a protective fixation. The printer is then wrapped in four-wall corrugated cardboard over the pallet. This is fastened with the Thimm Connect fastening system and thus forms the outer packaging. Thimm Connect consists of a screw and a locknut that can be operated without tools. Finally, the ramp is placed on top as a lid. When erected, the transport packaging reaches a height of just under two metres.

„Thanks to the simple Thimm Connect plug-in system, the transport packaging can be opened effortlessly and without damage on delivery and disassembled into its individual parts so that it can also be reused.“ Michael Weber, Head of Corporate Strategy + Marketing at Thimm Group

RhinoPlate fully recyclable

RhinoPlate corrugated board can be 100 per cent recycled. „A total of nine paper webs provide a stable and sustainable material alternative to wood,“ reports Weber. The BFSV-certified corrugated board is produced in CAAC quality at the Bavarian plant in Neuburg an der Donau, for example. Weber adds in conclusion: „RhinoPlate corrugated board has Carrying weight over 60 per cent lower than comparable wooden crates and a high load capacity. The wet strength of corrugated cardboard makes it ideal for Europe-wide transport and overseas shipping, as it has first-class test results in maritime climates and can withstand extreme climatic conditions. A further advantage is that heavy goods packaging made of corrugated board facilitates the familiar customs procedures.“
