The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine calls further certainties into question with each passing day. Against this backdrop, the German Council for Sustainable Development, which advises the German government on sustainability issues, has published a current position paper. The BDE agrees with this.

The BDE Federal Association of the German Waste, Water and Raw Materials Management Industry welcomes the current position paper of the German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) „Turning point for a consistent sustainability policy“. In view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the RNE's recommendations for securing the global sustainability perspective include the following, rapidly present an ambitious strategy at national level for a circular economy and a circular economy.

"Climate change and collapsing supply chains require much more speed in the transformation of Germany as a business location into a living circular economy. This applies equally to the federal legislator and the players in the manufacturing industry."

The RNE states that one of the necessary guiding decisions at national level is that circular economy should no longer remain just a heading. Expanding the circular economy can significantly reduce resource waste and dependency as well as climate-damaging emissions. In addition, the RNE believes that reducing resource requirements can also significantly reduce supply dependencies and corresponding costs. The RNE: „Among other things, we consider it more necessary than ever to quickly present an ambitious strategy for a circular economy and a circular economy, which creates a strong basis for the rapid implementation of resource-saving measures.“

Federal government on the move

Kurth: „It is now a matter of the Federal Government swiftly realising its promise in the coalition agreement to transform the economy. The goal of reducing primary raw material consumption and closed material cycles agreed in the circular economy chapter is correct. The presentation of a ‚National Circular Economy Strategy‘, which bundles existing raw materials policy strategies, has become even more important for a resilient production location in light of the war in Ukraine.“

Kurth reminded the audience that the go-ahead for the EU Green Deal at the end of 2019 was over two years ago. Kurth: „The Federal Government must not just wait for guidelines from Brussels, but must step up the pace itself when it comes to the circular economy. The impetus provided by the German Council for Sustainable Development should be taken up.“
