In future, Amazon customers from Germany will no longer receive items packed with plastic bubble wrap. Instead, the items will be packed with recycled and recyclable packing paper to prevent movement in the boxes.
This applies both to items that Amazon sells directly and to items from sales partners who ship their products via Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA). Instead the items are packaged with 100 per cent recycled and 100 per cent recyclable wrapping paper, to prevent movement in the cartons and protect the goods.
This is the latest step by Amazon towards Reduction of single-use plastic packaging in German logistics centres. In December 2021, the company already announced the switch from outer packaging made of disposable plastic to paper shipping envelopes and bags in Germany.
„Easily recyclable packaging is important for customers - and it's important for us. Dispensing with plastic bubble wrap is another step towards packaging that our customers can recycle easily and close to home.“
DisplayOlivier Pellegrini, Director Customer Delivery Experience at Amazon
Since 2015, Amazon has reduced the weight of packaging per outgoing consignment by more than 36 per cent and more than one million tonnes of packaging material saved. That is the equivalent of two billion shipping cartons.
Although Amazon says it is working to reduce single-use plastic packaging, customers in Europe may still be able to receive products in plastic packaging. Plastic filling material, such as bubble wrap, will continue to be used where necessary, for example to protect fragile objects such as glass.
