New head seam solution combines three stations

Even if it does not contribute to the safety of the packaging, a cosmetic seam suggests an all-round securely packaged product. For manufacturers, however, this means that in addition to the hermetic sealing and cooling stations, another sealing station has to be added to produce this cosmetic seam.

To save valuable space and costs during this process, the TSM head seam module from the Herrmann ultrasonic technology has been extended by a new function. In future, the module will be able to apply the sealing and cosmetic seams in one station. A cooling station is not necessary, as the packaging films only heat up in the sealing area inside the film during ultrasonic sealing. While manufacturers of packaging machines save valuable space in their systems, their users benefit from a more compact machine and lower acquisition costs. Herrmann head seam modules that are already installed can also be extended with the new upgrade.

Although the hermetic and cosmetic sealing seams are applied in one station, they are still applied in two consecutive steps. This allows both processes to be optimised and quality-monitored separately. Defective seals caused by residues of the filling material in the sealing zone are actively avoided with the TSM, as the vibrations of the ultrasound displace the filling material from the seam area. The Herrmann head seam module is particularly suitable for sealing stand-up pouches and sachets, regardless of the temperature or the nature of the contents.
