Huhtamaki expands plant in Spain

Huhtamaki is expanding its plant in Nules, Spain. Sustainable and innovative solutions are developed in the global competence centre.

Huhtamaki is expanding its plant in Nules, Spain, with an investment of 20 million euros. Sustainable and innovative solutions for customers are developed in the global competence centre. The investment will double the plant's capacity. 

As part of its comprehensive commitment to to satisfy its customers' growing demand for paper-based packaginghas Huhtamaki inaugurated the expansion of its existing production facility in Nules. The expansion, which will start production in January 2023. The investment includes a grant of 2.2 million euros from the Conselleria de Hacienda y Modelo Economico (Valencia Region). The company inaugurated the expansion of its existing paper-based packaging plant in Nules, Spain. The factory in Nules is a Huhtamaki's global centre of excellence for innovative, sustainable packaging solutions. for its customers throughout Europe.

The extension is 12,500 m2 and was built in accordance with the globally recognised BREEAM1 sustainability standards. This is in line with the 2030 sustainability targets, which include the use of 100 per cent renewable electricity, which is on track with a virtual power purchase agreement signed in December 2021 covering around 80 per cent of Huhtamaki's current electricity consumption in Europe. Thanks to the installation of an advanced HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system with air quality, temperature and humidity control, the plant also fulfils high thermal comfort standards for its employees.

At the beginning of this year, the company announced that its production site in Alf, Germany, shifted its focus from plastics to smooth fibre products, to meet the growing demand for plastic-free alternatives for food packaging. When fully operational, the state-of-the-art, automated production facility will have the capacity to produce up to 3.5 billion fibre products annually. This is the first large-scale production facility of its kind in Europe.
