To harmonise with a brand message, the interplay between the design, the material and the finishing of the packaging must be right. Chocolate manufacturer Rausch relies on Pergraphica, a premium design paper from Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, for the packaging of its very special plantation edition.
This premium chocolate from Rausch GmbH in Berlin invites you to indulge: The flavour profiles of the exquisite bars are coordinated with just as much attention to detail as the design and feel of the refined paper packaging. The family-run company with a rich history sees its plantation edition made from 100 per cent fine cocoa as a total work of art and takes those with a sweet tooth on an indulgent journey through eight different countries around the world. Each country corresponds to a chocolate variety, which is lovingly presented with an individual packaging design including a variety illustration. The highlight of Rausch's Plantation Edition is the "Costa Rica 84 % Cuvée Prestige" variety, not only in terms of flavour, but also in terms of presentation. The high-quality folding carton pampers the eye with soft brown tones, colourful illustrations and elegant gold accents, while the non-slip surface and fine embossing also ensure a high recognition value in terms of feel.
The packaging concept of Rausch's Plantagen-Edition follows a clear objective: Consumers should recognise at first glance and at first touch that they are looking at a high-quality and sustainable product. To achieve this, the packaging had to convey an impression of luxury and naturalness in line with Rausch's brand message and be produced just as sustainably as the contents.
That is why Rausch Highest quality requirements and the environmental footprint of the paper used. High colour intensity, consistent colour reproduction, excellent printability and the paper's behaviour during finishing were decisive factors in the choice.
When the packaging designer at Rausch held the uncoated premium design paper Pergraphica from Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper in her hands for the first time, it was immediately clear, how well paper and chocolate go together. The paper company's experts advised on the selection and provided various samples for test prints. The final choice was Pergraphica High White Rough in a grammage of 300 g/m2. Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper has subjected the bright white paper to extensive testing to ensure that brilliant results can be achieved with common printing processes and press types.
Thanks to the excellent printability of the special paper, the vibrant and natural colours of Rausch's Plantagen-Edition come across exactly as the chocolate manufacturer's design team had imagined. To ensure that the corporate colours were reproduced in the desired intensity, the printing company commissioned by Rausch tested various colour mixes on the paper samples. "When looking for the right paper, the CC colour profiles were also important to us. pergraphica.com very helpful," emphasises Kathrine Gustavus, communication designer at Rausch. The choice of Mondi paper was also an obvious one from a food safety perspective: the quality selected complies with European Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 for food contact materials.
The range of finishing options is particularly advantageous for use in outer packagingfor example through hot foil stamping or laser engraving. The rough surface provides a natural, emotionalising feel. It conveys an impression of value and sustainability. "Rausch is one of those customers who are just as passionate about their products as we are about Pergraphica, and you can see that in the result," emphasises Bernhard Cantzler, Head of Marketing & Innovation at Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.
"Our Pergraphica portfolio has gained a foothold in the luxury packaging segment. The large selection of grammages with rough and smooth surfaces and 31 colours makes the packaging stand out from the crowd. It is precisely that premium look and feel that companies are looking for to stand out at the PoS: be it fine wines and spirits or high-quality cosmetics," the expert continues.
For its Plantation Edition, Rausch uses natural resources sparingly to create a sustainable premium enjoyment experience. The chocolate manufacturer grows its fine flavoured cocoa sustainably and in harmony with nature on its own plantation in Costa Rica. No forests were cleared to create the plantation; instead, a former pasture area was skilfully converted into a cultivation area. Rausch's own "Direct Trade" seal makes the environmentally friendly journey of the chocolate from the plantation to the supermarket shelf transparent.
Rausch's holistic approach to sustainability is also reflected in the packaging concept. The uncoated, bright white design paper not only impressed with its special quality, but also with its comprehensive sustainability profile. All Pergraphica papers are CO2-In addition to the EU Ecolabel, they also bear the FSC certification, which certifies sustainable forest management.
Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper has also achieved Cradle to Cradle Certified at Bronze level for its entire range of own brands, including Pergraphica. These high-quality papers fit into a consistent circular economy. "Together with our customers, we are helping to ensure that our planet's resources are used sparingly," explains Bernhard Cantzler.
The high standards of quality and sustainability are a commonality between Rausch and Mondi and a guarantee for a trusting and productive co-operation. "It is very important to us that Mondi shares our values," emphasises Fenja Zwisele, PR and Communication Manager at Rausch. With its choice of materials, the chocolate manufacturer was able to convey its brand vision for the Plantagen-Edition in an impressive way. The luxury class packaging, designed with great attention to detail, invites you into an exotic world of flavours and haptics. Thanks to the high sustainability standards for products and packaging, consumers can snack without a guilty conscience.
The chocolate manufacturer is more than satisfied with the new generation of elegant packaging for the Plantagen edition and would also like to use Pergraphica for the packaging of future products.
