The Federal Ministry for the Environment is organising the Federal Ecodesign Award for the 12th time in 2023. Companies and individuals can take part and are looking for ideas and projects that are designed for the future - whether finished projects or student work. The deadline for submissions is 17 April.

Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (BMUV): „Good design and environmentally friendly products and services are important drivers of innovation to solve our environmental crises. The winners of the Federal Ecodesign Award prove this time and time again. Designers who are familiar with life cycle assessments and innovative, environmentally friendly materials help us to use fewer resources, destroy less of the environment and consume more sustainably, which is why I am looking forward to many new innovative products, concepts, services and young talents for the Federal Ecodesign Award.“

Prof Dr Dirk Messner, President of the Federal Environment Agency (UBA): „For the great transformation, we need future-proof processes and systems, as well as durable and recyclable products. We are looking for these good examples in the Federal Ecodesign Award.“

Support through guidelines

The submitted projects undergo a multi-stage process in which a panel of design and environmental experts and a high-calibre jury carry out the assessment. Projects that demonstrate outstanding environmental and design quality and make an innovative contribution to transformation are honoured. On 4 December 2023, the winners will be honoured and publicly announced at the award ceremony at the Federal Environment Ministry.

In addition to the criteria matrix of the Federal Ecodesign Award, support in the planning and design phase is provided by the 2022 comprehensively revised Ecodesignkit of the Federal Environment Agency. The Ecodesignkit is a portal, guide and toolbox. It provides orientation and helps to ask the right questions in the design process.
