Mondi and machine manufacturer Meurer have jointly developed a new secondary packaging solution made of paper for the packaging of food and beverage packages, which can be used to replace the plastic shrink film used to date.

The new paper solution, TrayWrap, is produced with Mondi's Advantage StretchWrap and will be from a coffee brand in the Nordic countries used to safely store twelve coffee packs during transport in Sweden.

The paper packaging holds the coffee packs firmly in position and is to the underside of the existing corrugated cardboard tray using four to six dots of adhesive. Pre-punched folding points provide stability on each open side so that the products can be viewed, stacked, transported and then quickly and easily unpacked for sale.

Advantage StretchWrap is made from 100 per cent kraft paper, which comes from renewable resources. It is uncoated, fully recyclable and can be easily disposed of by retailers in existing European paper recycling loops. The product has high strength, excellent puncture resistance and very good stretchability, so the solution can be used in a wide range of applications. is suitable for group packaging applications and future legal requirements in Europe.

Through close co-operation with Meurer, Mondi achieved that existing machines can be adapted for this new solution can: The technology used is similar to that for film technology, making it easy for food and beverage manufacturers to modify existing processes instead of investing in new machines.

The current Paper hood machine (PHM) from Meurer uses an inline paper technology that is more resistant to mechanical stress and can efficiently handle a wide range of paper grades, including Mondi's Advantage StretchWrap, as well as various tray formats.

„We are delighted to be working with Mondi to develop solutions that provide food and beverage manufacturers with effective and safe packaging solutions that reduce or replace unnecessary plastic. This is just one example of how effective paper can be in securing products and we look forward to working with more food manufacturers with this product and process to address today's challenges in the FMCG industry.”
