A new start-up product is coming to ALDI shelves from the end of October. A vegan chocolate dessert will be sold with a "Spoonie". A spoon that you can eat.

The startup Spoontainable is behind the edible spoon. With the "Spoonie", the founders from Heidelberg want to offer a sustainable alternative to disposable plastic cutlery. The spoon is made from salvaged food. These are by-products from chocolate production, for example.

The shape of the edible spoon substitute is reminiscent of an ice-cream scoop. There are two different types of "Spoonies": a variant made from oat husks and a "Choc" variant made from cocoa shell fibres. The latter is attached to the "Made with Luve" dessert from ALDI.

Sustainable plastic alternative made from natural ingredients

In 2019, founders Amelie Vermeer and Julia Piechotta presented the sustainable spoon as part of the ALDI Accelerator programme. The idea convinced the jury. By participating in the ALDI support programme, the young founders were able to further develop their business model and ultimately make the product ready for the market.

Collaboration between Aldi and start-ups to reduce packaging

Exclusive cooperation with Made with Luve

ALDI Nord and ALDI SOUTH are bringing the chocolate spoon to their stores as a promotional item from 30 October. The "Spoonie Choc" will be offered together with the vegan lupin dessert from the manufacturer "Made with Luve" in an exclusive cooperation. Both the pudding and Spoonie are vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free. The edible spoon and the pudding are attached to the dessert in a cardboard sleeve.

"As part of our ALDI packaging mission, we are constantly on the lookout for innovative products and solutions to minimise the use of packaging and plastic"
Anika Roß, Manager Corporate Responsibility Quality Assurance International at ALDI North

In January 2019, ALDI North and ALDI SOUTH removed all disposable plastic tableware and plastic straws from their product ranges. Where disposable items are indispensable, ALDI is looking for sustainable alternatives.
