The UK retail sector is responding to the demand for sustainable packaging solutions with innovative projects. One example is Ocado Retail's refill project. Packaging manufacturer Amcor is supplying bespoke containers for the initiative, which was launched in 2024. The aim is to offer everyday products such as pasta, rice, and laundry detergent in refillable packaging.

The project is the first of its kind at a major UK supermarket and promotes the reuse of packaging. Customers are encouraged to return empty containers with their next delivery. These are then cleaned and reused after appropriate refurbishment.

The extension of the pilot project coincides with a new report from GoUnpackaged, a partner in the Refill Coalition, which has published trial data identifying the benefits of a reuse model.

Focus on sustainability

Amcor, a global leader in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, is supporting the project with its bespoke containers. These are designed to meet the requirements of the reusable model while simultaneously reducing environmental impact. The collaboration between Amcor and Ocado Retail highlights the importance of partnerships in the packaging industry to promote sustainable solutions.

Potential and challenges

The refill project offers not only ecological advantages but also economic opportunities. By reusing packaging, companies can save costs while simultaneously reducing their ecological footprint. However, there are also challenges, such as the logistics of returning and cleaning the containers, as well as customer acceptance. The report by GoUnpackaged provides valuable insights into these aspects and shows that the project is on the right track.

Ocado Retail and Amcor's initiative could serve as a model for other retailers considering more sustainable packaging solutions. By demonstrating the benefits of a refill system, they could make a significant contribution to reducing single-use plastics while simultaneously strengthening customer loyalty.
