Canovation and packaging manufacturer Canpack have agreed to collaborate on the further development of the resealable can lid, CanReseal. The aim of the cooperation is to prepare the technology for pilot production and pave the way for market launch. Canovation's closure system will be combined with Canpack's global manufacturing and industry expertise.

CanReseal is in an advanced stage of development, according to the company. As part of the agreement, both companies intend to complete the remaining development work required to prepare the technology for use on pilot plants. The cooperation aims to bridge the gap between technical validation and industrial production.

Focus on existing dosing infrastructure

Canovation continues to be supported by Stolle Machinery Company, a supplier of machinery and tools for can manufacturing. The company will oversee the technical implementation and adaptation of the technology to existing production facilities.

CanReseal is designed as a resealable can system for aluminium beverage cans. According to Canovation, the solution can be used with existing production and filling equipment. At the same time, it is intended to increase convenience for consumers and support the circular economy by building on the established recycling infrastructure for aluminium.

The intended features include the resealability of aluminium cans, compatibility with existing production and filling processes, and support for circular economy and sustainability strategies. Furthermore, the solution is intended to improve mobility and convenience for consumers.

Pilot phase as the next step

„We are delighted to formalise our partnership with Canpack as we enter the final stages of market readiness and validation,“ said Jeff Grajewski, Chief Operating Officer of Canovation. „This collaboration allows us to work closely with a global leader in manufacturing as we prepare for pilot production and commercialisation.“

Fabio Hees, Group Commercial Officer at Canpack, stated: „This collaboration reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing innovative and sustainable packaging technologies. We look forward to working with Canovation to prepare CanReseal for commercialisation.“

According to the companies, the ongoing development work is to be completed in the short term. This will be followed by the establishment of pilot activities, which are intended to form the basis for a later commercial launch. Canovation is currently also seeking strategic and financial partners for the next phase of commercialisation.
