Corrugated cardboard replaces polystyrene

Mondi offers alternative packaging made of corrugated cardboard for products that are usually still protected with polystyrene during transport.

Polystyrene (EPS) packaging is repeatedly subject to laws that regulate its use. Mondi offers alternative packaging made from corrugated cardboard so that companies can still package their products, such as electrical and household appliances, safely.

As part of the further development of the UN treaty against plastic waste, governments from over 170 countries are working on political measures to combat the negative environmental impact of plastics that are difficult to recycle. The Trend towards the introduction of bans, charges and increased disposal fees for EPS packaging materials will continue.

Corrugated board packaging is 100 per cent recyclable and compostable. The corrugated board solutions from Mondi also include a Broad portfolio of cardboard packaging made from recycled fibres. In Europe, paper-based packaging has a recycling rate of 82.5 per cent, exceeding the combined recycling rates of all other packaging materials. Paper fibres can be recycled several times in good quality so that they remain in the cycle.

As a partner for sustainable growth, Mondi's material and design experts develop high-performance corrugated board solutions to enable the transition to circular packaging for household appliances. The industry has made the Protecting valuable goods for a long time on crumbling EPS material leave. Until now, substituting EPS materials with paper-based solutions was uneconomical from a cost perspective, but extended producer responsibility regulations, such as the EU Directive on packaging and packaging waste, have changed the economic factors.
