Production record for EPAL Euro pallets

EPAL Euro pallets set a new record in 2022. Growth of 7.55 per cent was achieved compared to the previous year.

After the production of EPAL Euro pallets struggled with difficulties in sourcing raw materials due to the war in Ukraine, a new record was set for 2022. Growth of 7.55 per cent was achieved compared to the previous year.

The European Pallet Association e.V. (EPAL) continued its successful course in 2022. After more than 100 million new EPAL Euro pallets were produced in a calendar year for the first time in 2021, EPAL has now exceeded the Production in 2022 at a new record of 109.05 million EPAL Euro pallets increased. This corresponds to growth of 7.55 per cent or 7.65 million EPAL Euro pallets compared to the previous year.

The volume of EPAL Euro pallet repairs was almost identical to the previous year (-0.33 per cent). After the significantly reduced return of used EPAL Euro pallets initially led to a decline in repair figures in the first half of 2022, this was almost completely offset by a positive trend in repairs in the second half of 2022.

The production of EPAL mesh boxes has also developed positively. Following the strong growth in 2021 of 66.7 per cent to 288,000 EPAL mesh boxes, the Production increased once again to 340,400 EPAL mesh boxes in 2022 (+ 18 per cent).

„The year 2022 was associated with many challenges for EPAL. The war in Ukraine has personally affected EPAL's licence holders in Ukraine. At the same time, many supply routes for pallet timber and pallet nails in Europe were disrupted. However, EPAL's licence holders have overcome these difficulties with great commitment and have thus been able to meet the growing demand for exchangeable EPAL Euro pallets at all times. We would like to thank the more than 1,600 EPAL licence holders who produce and repair EPAL pallets. They are the basis for the reliable supply of high-quality new and used EPAL pallets to industry, trade and logistics.“

Dirk Hoferer and Jarek Maciążek, President of EPAL

Results of the statistics on the production of EPAL Euro pallets from 2013 to 2022

The high quality of EPAL pallets is guaranteed by the long service life of Euro pallets, which is rated at 6-10 years in various studies. Based on an average service life of 7 years, there are currently clearly more than 650 million EPAL Euro pallets available in the open EPAL pallet pool, based on the production data of recent years.

„With more than 650 million EPAL Euro pallets in circulation, the open EPAL pallet pool is by far the largest Euro pallet pool in the world. In addition to the rapid supply of new EPAL Euro pallets, users of EPAL Euro pallets also have free access to an inexhaustibly large number of high-quality used EPAL Euro pallets at any time and anywhere in Europe.“

Davide Dellavalle, Vice-President of EPAL

In the open EPAL pallet pool, users from industry, trade and logistics have access to more than 500 EPAL licence holders who produce new pallets. In addition, more than 1,100 repair companies supply users with used pallets.

„The close network of EPAL licence holders in Europe, which is supplemented by many service providers and countless users, avoids dependence on a single supplier and ensures fast delivery thanks to short transport routes. Users of EPAL pallets have therefore not experienced any restrictions to their logistics processes and pallet logistics in 2022, even in times of high demand.“

Tatyana Sargsyan, Vice-President of EPAL
