Three sustainable product packaging ideas have been nominated for the German Sustainability Award's first ever special packaging prize. A reusable deposit system for cups, a plant pot made from plant waste and lids made from polypropylene were nominated.
With „FairCup“, an initiative for a returnable deposit cup for coffee to go was nominated, which emerged from a school project. It should be possible to return the cup to all cafés, snack bars and other shops participating in the system. It should also be possible to return the cups via authorised bottle return machines.
„The FairCup is a resource- and energy-saving alternative to the around six billion disposable drinks cups that are used in Germany every year. In addition, no additives such as plasticisers, BPA, melamine or resins are used,“ praised the jury of the Sustainability Award.

The Fiber Engineering GmbH was once again nominated for a 100 per cent compostable plant pot. The pots are made from residues of regionally renewable crops. It is therefore a genuine „Cradle-to-Cradle-product“. It replaces disposablePlant pots made of plastic and can be planted directly with the purchased plant or flower. The reasons for the nomination also emphasise the low energy and water consumption required to produce the plant containers.
„The Special Packaging Award is intended to help people understand that it is not simply a matter of replacing plastic with other materials, but rather that we need to consume fewer raw materials, use recycled materials and recycle all packaging.
design for recycling.“
Michael Herrenbauer, member of the expert panel and Professor of Packaging Technology at Stuttgart Media University

For their alternative solution for the Aluminium lid of food containers, in turn, the Profol Kunststoffe GmbH categorised as worthy of an award. The CPPeel single-material board is suitable for sealing packaging for yoghurt, instant soups or margarine. The seal made of Polypropylene existing lids are characterised by lower energy consumption, better recyclability and less food waste due to higher Puncture resistance the Sustainability Award jury writes. Consumers do not have to separate the lid from the cup when disposing of it, as was previously the case.

The German Sustainability Award is presented annually by the foundation of the same name. The special packaging prize is celebrating its premiere with the support of the Rewe Group, and an independent jury of experts chaired by Prof Dr Günther Bachmann, Secretary General of the German Council for Sustainable Development, decided on the finalists and winners of the competition at the beginning of September. The winner will be honoured on 22 November 2019 as part of the German Sustainability Day in Düsseldorf.
