Although cosmetic seams on stand-up pouches are not necessary for their stability, they give consumers an additional sense of product safety. However, an additional production step often has to be included in the manufacturing process. Herrmann Ultraschalltechnik has a solution to avoid this extra step.
Even if they do not contribute to the safety of the packaging, a cosmetic seam suggests an all-round safely packaged product and thus ensures consumer confidence. For manufacturers, however, this means that in addition to the stations for hermetic sealing and cooling, a further sealing station has to be connected to produce the cosmetic seam.
In order to save valuable space and costs during this process, the TSM head seam module from Herrmann has been extended by a new function. In future, the module will be able to apply the sealing and cosmetic seam in one station. A cooling station is not necessary, as the packaging films only heat up in the sealing area inside the film during ultrasonic sealing. While manufacturers of packaging machines save valuable space in their systems, their users benefit from a more compact machine and lower acquisition costs. Herrmann head seam modules that are already installed can also be extended with the new upgrade.
Ultrasound ensures a clean seam
Although the hermetic and cosmetic sealing seams are applied in one station, this is still done in two consecutive steps. This has the advantage that both processes can be optimised and quality-monitored separately. If there is an error during the sealing process, for example due to misalignment in the sealing station or wrinkles in the head area, this is recognised immediately and the rejection of the pack is initiated straight away.
The TSM actively prevents faulty seals caused by residues of the filling material in the sealing zone, as the vibrations of the ultrasound displace the filling material from the seam area. Thanks to the constant monitoring of the sealing processes and the clean closures, several tonnes of waste can be saved every day, according to the company. and at the same time increase the shelf life of the food.
The Herrmann head seam module is particularly suitable for sealing stand-up pouches and sachets - regardless of the temperature or the nature of the contents. Heat is only generated for a short time due to friction inside the materials and does not need to be supplied externally. This means that even monomaterials can be sealed optically flawlessly using ultrasound despite their sensitive properties. There is also no need to heat up the tools, which not only saves time but also up to 75 per cent of energy.
