Zotefoams and Südpack have entered into a partnership. The companies want to work on the technology for producing sustainable beverage cartons and annual production capacity. The focus is on Zotefoams' ReZorce mono-material barrier packaging.
ReZorce is an innovative material that is currently being HDPE mono-material alternative to cardboard packaging for liquid foods (KfN). In July 2023, Zotefoams signed a joint development agreement with a leading global manufacturer of beverage packaging, under which ReZorce will be available on supermarket shelves for the first time in the third quarter of 2024.
„This partnership is a great step forward in our plans to further optimise ReZorce quickly and ensures that we will be in a very good position to meet the high market demand for a more sustainable beverage carton after the upcoming market tests. In addition, Südpack is not only an expert in extrusion technology, but also in recycling and has a great deal of in-house expertise and good solutions for mechanical and chemical recycling. The ReZorce model had to be suitable for the circular economy right from the start. That is why Südpack is the ideal partner for us in this respect. We are delighted that Südpack will be accompanying us on the next stage of the ReZorce journey.“
Neil Court-Johnston, President of the MuCell Extrusion division of Zotefoams
The agreement with South pack, after the Zotefoams ReZorce can produce up to 100 million ReZorce cartons per year in addition to its internal capacity, is initially valid for a period of three years and can be extended by mutual agreement. The multi-layered structure of ReZorce offers Similar barrier properties to aseptic packaging made of several materials, which are commonplace in the food and beverage industry. But compared to them ReZorce recyclable. This structure enables the inclusion of recyclates in the core of the material and pure polymer on the outer surfaces. For this reason, ReZorce beverage cartons comply with food safety regulations while meeting the recycled content targets set out in the EU Directive on packaging and packaging waste are defined.
„With our functional film, we will contribute to the implementation of a packaging concept that will fulfil the recyclability requirements of the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation). In our view, this joint development project is an important step towards closing the gaps in beverage packaging.“
