DS Smith is strengthening its production capacities in Northern Europe: the packaging specialist is investing up to DKK 100 million (around EUR 13.4 million) in its plant in Grenaa, Denmark. The aim is to meet the demand for fibre-based packaging solutions and to increase efficiency and precision in production.

The site in Grenaa will undergo extensive technological modernisation as part of the investment. The focus is on a new production line for flexographic printing and rotary die-cutting, which will be used in particular for processing corrugated cardboard. The line comprises several printing units as well as modern automation and control technologies, which should enable high production speeds and precise results.

Focus on automation and precision

With this investment, DS Smith is responding to changing requirements along the supply chain. Kristian Eriksen, Sales Director at DS Smith Denmark, said that there is a clear trend towards more automated packaging and logistics processes. This places significantly higher demands on the consistent quality and precision of packaging. With this investment, the company is strengthening its ability to provide solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into customers' automated processes - both now and in the future.

According to the company, the new technology enables faster changeover times and the production of complex die-cutting contours with reduced material usage. This should be particularly advantageous for customers with automated packaging and logistics processes.

Capacity expansion and more stable supply chains

DS Smith expects the modernisation to increase capacity by up to 15 million square metres of corrugated board per year at the Grenaa site. At the same time, delivery times are to be shortened and supply stability improved.

Another focus is on optimising supply chains. The new plant technology should help to make production processes more predictable and increase resilience to disruptions.

At the same time, DS Smith is also investing in Sweden: An extension of 3,000 square metres is being built at the Bredasten site in Värnamo, and warehouse activities are also being relocated there from Malmö. The measures should be completed by June 2027.

Fibre-based packaging as a growth driver

The investment underlines the growing importance of fibre-based packaging as an alternative to plastic. DS Smith is pursuing its strategy of focussing packaging solutions more strongly on the circular economy and recyclability.
