Compensatory measure

Packaging expert Karl Knauer is taking part in the „Efficient cooking stoves for Uganda“ campaign to offset his energy balance. This involves replacing open fires with closed ovens. This reduces wood consumption and protects the tree population. Other benefits include a more efficient use of fuel and a reduction in flue gas pollution for the people living there. Local stove production also promotes local craftsmanship. By supporting this project, the company is able to fully offset its carbon footprint, making its operations 100 per cent climate-neutral.

Certificates and other measures

Karl Knauer KG is organised according to the Environmental management standard ISO 14001 certified. As a packaging manufacturer, the basic materials used by Karl Knauer KG are cardboard, corrugated cardboard and paper. On customer request, one hundred per cent of the material used can come from exemplary, environmentally and socially responsible forestry. This is made possible by membership of the two programmes Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC™).

The packaging expert is involved in the fight against climate change with many other measures. For example, Karl Knauer KG purchases the entire external Power supply from one hundred per cent regenerative sources and even covers part of its energy requirements with its own photovoltaic systems. Another important point is the Material efficiency. Not only is the material used optimally thanks to clever designs, but the lean management activities in particular have significantly minimised set-up times and thus considerably reduced overall cardboard consumption. The resulting production waste is first separated and then sorted into different categories. Realisations fed into the system. An in-house waste recycling centre, for example, presses PE films and punching waste separately and then passes them on to the cardboard and plastics industry for further use. Finally, specialists from Karl Knauer KG advise each customer on request on ecological packaging alternatives such as agricultural waste cardboard or grass cardboard.

The climate initiative of the print and media associations

The climate initiative helps with training and annual audits to collect the necessary data and trains employees in the use of the CO2 calculator. In addition, the initiative offers services such as energy consulting, quality assurance and decommissioning of emissions. It works in accordance with DIN and ISO standards and issues the corresponding certificates following successful audits.
