The Finnish paperboard, kraftliner and pulp manufacturer Metsä Board is organising the packaging design competition „Better with less - Design Challenge“. Until 31 March 2018, packaging designers are invited to enter their own work in the competition, which is endowed with 10,000 euros.
„The Packaging design can have a significant impact on the Environment impact. We need to develop new solutions and think about future generations - creating concepts that combine a better consumer experience with a lower environmental impact.“ This is how competition jury chairman Cyril Drouet, „Design & Innovation Director“ at Metsä Board, describes the concept behind the „Better with less - Design Challenge“. Participants are asked to develop new environmentally friendly and functional solutions for the most frequently used everyday goods. Packaging concepts and submit them to the international jury for evaluation.

Five internationally recognised packaging design experts are members of the Competition jury to: Terri Goldstein is a branding and packaging design specialist. Peter Désilets works as a strategic consultant and specialises in sustainable packaging design. Marianne Rosner Klimchuck heads the Communication Design Pathways department at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Lars G. Wallentin is a packaging designer for globally recognised brands, and John B. Mahaffie is a futurologist who thinks about packaging solutions of the future. [infotext icon]
Competition rules
The „Design Challenge - Better with less“ competition has been running since 6 November 2017 until 31 March 2018 and is open to professional packaging designers and students. New packaging concepts in the areas of consumer goods, snack packaging, e-commerce, wellness, cosmetics and dry foods can be submitted. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros. The student participants can look forward to a special prize. The winner will be able to complete an internship with Metsä Board's Packaging Services Team in Shanghai. The finalists and winners will be announced in spring 2018.
