Bubble wrap consists of at least half recycled material

Storopack has introduced the „AIRplus Void Recycle“ film for air cushions. It consists of 50 per cent recycled material. Most of the material comes from the company's own production facilities and is fed into the film production process in the form of recycled plastic granulate.

Bubble wrap is often indispensable. However, the plastic product is also criticised for using up valuable resources. Storopack, the Metzingen-based protective packaging specialist, is now presenting a film for bubble wrap that consists of at least 50 per cent recycled material.

The new product „AIRplus Void Recycle“ is ideal for companies that value sustainability, shares Storopack with. The film is made from Polyethylene (PE). At least half of the raw material used for this comes from recycled material. According to the information provided, it comes from the company's own production and is supplied in the form of recycled Plastic granulate is fed into the film production process. Further recycling material is purchased externally, the plastics processor continues.

Robust and durable and with all the advantages of PE

Customers do not have to compromise on the quality of the film, it is emphasised. „AIRplus Void Recycle“ is robust and durable and therefore offers the familiar material properties of PE. At the same time, the processing method saves resources.

„Recycling is essential in order to utilise raw materials as efficiently and sustainably as possible. It is often possible to produce new raw materials for protective packaging from leftover materials without losing the important properties.“
Hermann Reichenecker, Managing Partner of Storopack.

With the new film for air cushions, Storopack is expanding its portfolio of Packaging materials with recycled raw materials. The Recycled paper „PAPERplus“ even consists entirely of recycled material. A proportion of at least 90 per cent recycled EPS come the Packaging chips „PELASPAN“. „We are continuously working on developing further products with a recycled content,“ says Hermann Reichenecker.

Storopack also active in the „ChemCycling“ project“

Storopack is also part of the „ChemCycling“ project that the Mannheim-based chemical giant BASF is conducting with other companies. A chemical recycling method for plastic waste is being trialled. These are processed into so-called pyrolysis oil using a thermochemical process. At BASF, this oil is then essentially broken down into the basic chemicals ethylene and propylene in a „steam cracker“ at 850 degrees Celsius, from which high-quality plastic products can then be manufactured again.

Storopack has produced insulating packaging from the „Styropor P Ccycled“ material produced in this way. We reported on this in this article.
