To counteract the global problem of plastic waste, Stora Enso and Sulapac are launching a renewable and biodegradable straw. This is now available for anyone looking for more environmentally friendly solutions.
The first customers are already convinced by the sustainable alternative and are replacing their plastic and paper straws with the biodegradable straws from Sulapac. These include the Finnair lounges in Helsinki, the company Altia, the Hotel St. George and the vegan café Kippo.
The straws will be available to end consumers from January about Biofutura.com, an online shop specialising in compostable tableware and packaging, as well as the Online retailer Verkkokauppa.com available.
„There is clearly a great demand for our product, which fulfils the sustainability criteria and also offers outstanding user-friendliness. Like all Sulapac materials, the 100% straw is microplastic-free. It is designed to mimic nature - if it accidentally ends up in the sea, it behaves like a birch leaf and does not harm the ecosystem,“ explains Sulapac CEO Suvi Haimi.
The straws are based on on a material innovation from Sulapac, for which a patent is pending. The main components are Renewable raw materials such as wood and plant-based binders. The straw is designed for recycling through industrial composting.
„This renewable and biodegradable material can replace fossil materials and contribute to the fight against plastic waste. Our collaboration with Sulapac allows us to explore new types of innovative and scalable materials and expand our range of renewable solutions,“ explains Marcus Dehlin, Head of Business Partnerships at Stora Enso.
In the first phase, thehe straws in Europe and further launches will follow. The sustainable straws are produced using machines that were originally developed for the production of plastic straws, meaning that a Switching to the renewable variant is easy possible.
