The Cortec Corporation has Recyclable moisture barrier coating for food packaging.
Food packaging for retailers and consumers often relies on polythene or wax-coated paper and cardboard to resist moisture and seal out contaminants. The problem is that these packaging materials are more difficult to shred than normal uncoated paper and corrugated board. In addition, they cannot normally be recycled through normal channels. An environmentally friendly alternative for the production of moisture-resistant paper and corrugated cardboard boxes is EcoShield® Barrier Coating represents. Cortec Corporation had already presented this solution at the end of 2018 and has now optimised it further.
Cortec improves barrier coating
With the new product version, Cortec improved sedimentation performance. The product is now also produced at a new site in St Paul, USA. According to the company, a higher mixing capacity and higher mixing speeds are available here. This makes it possible to obtain better dispersions.
The water-based barrier coating EcoShield® Barrier Coating is Recyclable and 100 per cent reusable. Conventional wax and polythene coatings are therefore no longer required. Cortec's coating can be used on kraft and recycled paper as well as on linings for corrugated cardboard boxes.

It provides a waterproof moisture barrier with excellent oil and grease resistance. In tests according to ASTM E-96, paper coated with EcoShield® Barrier Coating showed very good water vapour barrier properties compared to paper coated with polyethylene and, according to the company, was better than standard wax paper.
In addition, papers coated with EcoShield® Barrier Coating feature Improved physical properties for example, in terms of tear and tensile strength. According to the company, the barrier coating can be applied by most common paper roll coaters, including gravure, flex, air knife, reverse roll. The drying temperature is 82-93° C (180-200° F), and the recommended paper weights are 8-11 lb / ream (3,000 ft²) (13-18 g / m²).
