Why bucket packaging is particularly important right now

Transport packaging for transport packaging. That sounds like a contradiction at first. Let someone whose bucket protection has just won the WorldStar Award explain to us why the handle on the bucket is no longer sufficient for transport and what the coronavirus pandemic has to do with it.

Transport packaging for transport packaging. That sounds like a contradiction at first. Let someone whose bucket protection has just won the WorldStar Award explain to us why the handle on the bucket is no longer sufficient for transport and what the coronavirus pandemic has to do with it.

Buckets are the ideal packaging solution for solid, liquid or viscous contents. They have a practical handle for transporting from A to B. But what if the journey is longer? Never before have so many buckets had to be sent by post as at present. That's why buhl paperform has developed BucPac, a sustainable transport packaging.

Sustainable transport solution

The three-dimensional design prevents the bucket from bursting or the lid from opening unintentionally during transport. BucPac is made from 100% waste paper pulp and can be fully recycled after use via the waste paper recycling system. This solution has already been awarded the German Packaging Award 2020, and recently also received the WorldStar Award of the World Packaging Organisation.

Corona makes bucket packaging more important

But why do you need packaging for packaging? Answers from buhl Managing Director Christoph Buhl

pj: You say that protective bucket packaging has become more important than ever. Why is that the case?

Christoph Buhl: Especially in times of contact minimisation, online shipping is becoming increasingly important for maintaining supply. Demand is also being fuelled by the growing sales of smaller manufacturers and retail chains, which are gaining greater market access through online shops.

pj: Putting the bucket in a cardboard box and wrapping a little air cushion around it doesn't seem to be enough, why?

Christoph Buhl: The shipper wants the bucket not to be „in the bucket“ when it arrives. Defined packaging is therefore a safe way to delight the customer with flawless goods.

pj: What does the shipper have to look out for when sending buckets on a journey?

Christoph Buhl: Many shipping service providers have defined clear rules for shipping liquids in order to protect other packaged goods against contamination or destruction. These provide the framework conditions for insured shipping.

pj: BucPac is the result of your development work. It sounds like it's not easy to produce transport packaging for buckets like this. What challenges did your developers have to deal with?

Christoph Buhl:Every bucket is developed with special properties in mind and every product behaves differently. Temperature, for example, is an important parameter that affects both the flexibility of the bucket and the flowability of the contents. In addition, the shipping unit should be designed in a sensible pallet size if possible. In addition, there are sometimes requirements for good automation and, finally, the development must not ignore economic aspects. This means that the development has sufficient parameters to avoid boredom caused by underchallenge.
