Recyclable barrier paper keeps salads fresh

Mondi has developed a recyclable paper bag with a functional barrier for salads, for which the company is involved in the entire value chain - from sustainable forest management and the production of pulp and kraft paper to the application of the coating and printing of the final material.

Mondi has launched its first recyclable paper bag with a functional barrier for salads in the LSDH Group's Les Crudettes range. The sustainable packaging is a fully integrated solution - Mondi is involved in the entire value chain, from the sustainable management of the forest to the production of pulp and kraft paper, the application of the coating and the printing of the final material.

The French salad brand has replaced its transparent, glossy polypropylene (PP) packaging with the recyclable, functional barrier paper from Mondi for a selection of their pre-washed, ready-to-eat salads. The new packaging consists of 95 per cent paper with a functional barrier layer, This means that the salad stays fresh for up to 10 days - just as long as with the previous plastic packaging. In France, it is categorised by the recycling authority (Cerec) as recyclable in the waste paper stream.

The bags are printed using the flexographic printing process, with lifelike motifs of the salad contents on the front and a QR code that informs consumers about the contents, quality, recycling and even refunds if they buy a bag whose contents are not as fresh as expected.

Existing machines process recyclable barrier paper

In line with the EcoSolutions approach, Mondi worked closely with LSDH and its machine supplier Ilapak together to ensure that the new packaging is fit for purpose, and used on the existing machines can be used. The new solution is deliberately designed to be sustainable and will support the LSDH Group in realising its sustainability goal of reducing the amount of plastic in its packaging.

„We evaluated everything from sourcing to machinery to the recycling process - working closely with LSDH to provide a sustainable solution without compromising on packaging performance. A key focus of our Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) is to develop innovative packaging that keeps materials in circulation and avoids waste. We are proud that our new circular functional barrier paper is part of this solution.“ Paulus Goess, Sales Director Speciality Kraft Paper, Mondi

Géraldine Collet, Marketing and Innovation Director, Les Crudettes / Groupe LSDH adds: „This is just the first step on the road to sustainability for our ready-to-eat salad range. The packaging is produced on existing machines, looks great on the shelf, is moisture resistant and supports our sustainability goals. These salad bags could revolutionise the market for ready-to-eat salads, as they greatly reduce the amount of plastic required and keep the food fresh at the same time“. The salads with new packaging are now on sale throughout France.
