Metsä Board supplies the paperboard quality for the new packaging of the premium potatoes „La Ratte“ from the Finnish company Tuorekartano Oy. The packaging is easy to recycle, biodegradable and made from a lightweight and durable virgin fibre board. This means that potatoes are ideally protected from damage and sunlight.
The Finnish company Tuorekartano Oy presented a special cardboard potato packaging as a low-plastic alternative to conventional potato packaging. In future, the premium potatoes „La Ratte“ will be Easy-to-recycle, biodegradable packaging made from a lightweight, durable cardboard quality from Metsä Board, a European manufacturer of premium fresh fibre paperboard and a Metsä Group company. The cartonboard is ideal for protecting the potatoes from damage and sunlight. The small packaging size also helps to prevent food waste.
„Tuorekartano is a company that is not only committed to the 2030 Agenda and the 2050 Commitment, but also pursues clear sustainability goals itself. This also includes Plastic-free packaging like the new boxes for La Ratte potatoes. We have already reduced the amount of plastic in our packaging by 25 per cent,“ explains Kari Kastari, CEO of Tuorekartano Oy.

The new packaging consists of the lightweight MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB board quality, which made from pure virgin fibre is produced and Suitable for direct food contact is. Thanks to its dispersion coating, it has increased grease and moisture resistance. The packaging is also easy to recycle and also suitable for home composting.
„Environmental issues are important to us. That's why we continuously optimise our operating and production processes in terms of environmental compatibility and our responsibility,“ explains Kalle Hurttila, Production Director at Hurtti-Paino Oy, the potato packaging manufacturer. „In this respect, it is important, that the materials we use are recyclable and food-safe. We opted for Metsä Board because the board quality completely fulfils our requirements for sustainability and excellent printability. „
