SIG is the only beverage carton manufacturer to produce 100 % packaging using renewable energy. A new contract to secure real-time wind energy for the production of SIG carton packs in Germany underlines the company's commitment to doing even more for the environment by investing directly in renewable energy capacity.
Under the terms of this power purchase agreement (PPA), the Power from two wind turbines in Beppen near Hanover in real time - during energy generation - to SIG's German production sites. The plants have a total output of 2.6 MWp and generate around 2,800 MWh per year. - enough to supply 1,000 four-person households for a year.
Investment in renewable energy
SIG's production has been climate-neutral since 2018. The company's packaging is produced using 100 % renewable energy (electricity and gas). Initially, most of the renewable electricity was sourced indirectly, either through guarantees of origin or through international GoldPower®-certificates for renewable energies. SIG is now focussing on Opportunities to purchase or produce a larger proportion of renewable electricity directly.
At the centre of this approach are Investments in local solar systems at the company's production sites worldwide. SIG already has solar capacities of 7.2 MWp at its production sites in China and Thailand. Further systems are under construction at the production sites in Brazil, China and Germany. Additional projects in Austria, Saudi Arabia and Mexico are in the planning phase.

The PPA contract for the wind turbines in Beppen is the SIG's first direct investment in renewable energies outside its own production sites. PPA contracts enable SIG to invest directly in renewable capacities outside its own locations.
„Through power purchase agreements for wind power plants, we are securing our Real-time renewable energy for the production of our carton packs in Germany. Together with our growing global portfolio of on-site solar systems at our production sites, we see such agreements as the key to our success. most sustainable way to invest directly in renewable energy capacities."

SIG wants to achieve even more
As part of its Way Beyond Good, SIG is now examining further opportunities to invest in additional renewable energy capacity - both at its own production sites and externally. The company's investments in renewable energy for production have to date more than half a million tonnes of CO2equivalents, thereby contributing to a lower-carbon supply chain. SIG also encourages all suppliers to use renewable energies so that the Reduce climate impact and contribute to decarbonisation in the supply chain.
