The Australian packaging manufacturer O F Packaging has developed a stand-up pouch with a barrier that is rolled up before disposal and is therefore easier to recognise in recycling plants. The solution has now received a Packaging Innovation Award from Dow.
O F Packaging has developed a high-barrier packaging for muesli and granola products for its customer Brookfarm. better recognised in sorting systems than flat bags. The Roll 'n' Recycle- packaging was developed in close co-operation with partners Prep Design and Results Group.
"Recycling used packaging can be a challenge. Flexible packaging is generally not easily recognised by material recovery machines and manual removal of such materials is difficult, if not impractical. It took the dedication of our team and partners and more than 12 months of hard work and testing to realise this new packaging. Our solution allows consumers to use the empty, flat packaging made from 100 per cent polyethylene into a 3D mould that is suitable for the recycling binso that they can be recycled as part of existing processes. Receiving the Diamond Award is a great honour and we are grateful for this recognition from industry experts around the world."
