Balluff had a lot to be happy about in 2021. The fourth-generation family-run company celebrated its 100th anniversary and also achieved record sales. The company generated a total of 504 million euros and was able to increase turnover across all company groups.

Sales with customers in the packaging industry increase
Last year, the company was able to increase sales in its core sectors - the automotive industry, robotics and mechanical and plant engineering. Balluff is also pushing ahead with its diversification: the Sales with customers from the packaging, food and beverage industry increased by 27 per cent. Electromobility, in particular battery production, is also a growth driver with a 50 per cent increase in sales.
"The digitalisation of our customers' production not only holds enormous growth potential for us. We are also looking at our own processes and strengthening networked, global collaboration. With our Strategic Incubation Programmes (SIPs), we are accelerating innovation and testing business ideas such as the Smart Reordering System or the Portable Condition Monitoring System with our customers."
Florian Hermle, Managing Director
The goal of a completely digital product life cycle from the parts list to the digital twin is what the company wants to achieve by 2025. Another successful example of consistent digitalisation is the web shop, which generated 10 percent of total sales last year.

The worldwide Supply bottlenecks, particularly for electronic components continue to pose major challenges for the entire industry. "To minimise the impact on our customers as much as possible, we set up a global task force early on in 2021. It brings together experts from all areas of the company and allocates the producible production volumes to customer orders and delivery priorities in the best possible way," says Nonnenmann. In addition, the company has tapped additional sources of supply and developed product variantswhich are less dependent on the scarce electronic components.
Increasing demand for automation solutions
Despite all the challenges, the successful year 2021 creates a good starting position: the Incoming orders at the end of the past financial year were 44 per cent than in December 2020 and the global demand for sensor and automation solutions from Balluff remains high. The company plans to further expand production capacity at its large series production sites. In addition, the Global supplier base expanded and the logistics and transport network will be aligned even more closely with the regional needs of the markets.
Due to the global supply bottlenecks for electronic components, the war in Ukraine, its impact on the global economy and the unclear further course of the pandemic, the management remains cautious with specific forecasts. "We are operating in a time of great uncertainty. The war in Ukraine - a country in the centre of Europe - is affecting us all. We will do everything we can to respond to the situation as flexibly as possible and in the interests of our customers," explains Hermle.
