According to a study by Endava, the response to the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated digitalisation by up to ten years for 84% of companies worldwide. Almost all German companies surveyed now rate their level of digitalisation as good or even excellent.

A new study by Endava, a global provider of digital transformation and agile development services, reveals that companies around the world have learnt their lessons from the pandemic and used them as a basis to improve their digital transformation. realigned our approach to the introduction of digital technologies. According to the study, German companies in particular have caught up in the last two years: accordingly, a large majority of respondents (94 per cent) rate their company's performance in the introduction of digital technologies as „good“ or „excellent“. Only Australia, at 95 per cent, achieved a slightly higher score than Germany.

The respondents were 1,000 managers and IT decision-makers from Germany, the UK, the Nordic countries, the USA, Australia and Singapore, operating in a wide range of industries.

The vast majority of managers surveyed confirmed that the pandemic has exposed problems and weaknesses in their existing technologies. Accordingly, almost nine out of ten companies (87 per cent) had to act to accelerate the introduction of digital solutions and almost all respondents (99 per cent) admitted that they were not sufficiently prepared for the pandemic. Almost two out of five German companies (38 per cent) even had to fundamentally overhaul their technology portfolio - Only in the Nordic countries was this figure even higher (48 per cent).

In order to cope with this „new normality“, the companies opted for a fast, iterative approach that utilises short deadlines to overcome immediate challenges, and which has proven to be surprisingly effective. The result: for 84 per cent of companies worldwide (and 85 per cent of German companies), the introduction of digital technologies has been accelerated by up to ten years due to the pandemic.

„Covid-19 has shown organisations around the world that it is important to be flexible and fast when developing and implementing digital strategies. During the pandemic, the working environment kept changing practically overnight and companies had to adapt quickly and introduce new technologies to solve emerging problems. This approach of accelerated digitalisation has proven its worth. Companies need to keep pace with technological progress not only to pursue their own digitalisation strategies, but also to be able to respond to unforeseen problems.“

Quantum leap for the German economy

This process of iterative, accelerated digitalisation will continue. Among those surveyed, a total of 92 per cent stated that your company has increased the budget for digitalisation measures. In addition, 88 percent have introduced optimisation programmes to better respond to weaknesses and 95 percent plan to invest money in developing the skills they need to improve their digital competencies.

The respondents also outlined their optimal approach for these improvements: 69 per cent should focus on short-term measures, 30 per cent on long-term measures. The weighting among the German respondents shifted slightly in favour of long-term measures: The figure for these is 37 per cent - the highest in an international comparison - and the figure for short-term measures is 61 per cent.

Peter Skulimma adds: „It is encouraging to see how many organisations now understand the benefits of a faster approach to technology implementation and are investing accordingly. The German economy as a whole has learnt to be agile and that is a real quantum leap. The challenge now is to ensure that they consistently continue the strategic acceleration of their digitalisation after the pandemic. They must prepare to build on what they already have and continuously optimise it. For companies that want to stay at the forefront of their industry, it is crucial to put the user at the centre of this development. Changes need to be carefully considered to ensure they actually improve services and offerings, and iterated rather than fully implemented immediately.“

The Endava study also shows that companies are already looking to the future and considering which new technologies they can best integrate into their existing solutions. It is not surprising that cloud optimisation is a high priority, as is artificial intelligence. New concepts such as the metaverse were also very popular with respondents. In Germany, technologies for multi-cloud environments and zero-trust security also achieved top rankings.
