
The Finnish paperboard manufacturer Metsä Board has launched a design competition. Under the motto „Better with Less“, the company is inviting designers worldwide to create their vision of waste-free packaging. Those who convince the jury of renowned experts can win up to 10,000 euros.
In the future, the circular economy will determine all consumption. The demand for packaging continues to grow and we need to utilise the design potential in even more innovative ways to conserve our planet's resources. It is therefore necessary to consider the entire life cycle of the packaging: From efficient design to simple recycling and targeted reuse - with the result that no waste is produced. This is a huge responsibility, but also an excellent playground for innovation.

The „Better with Less - Design Challenge“ is calling on designers for the third time this year, Present solutions based on recyclable materials from renewable sources. It encourages designs that improve the shopping experience while reducing the consumption of resources and waste. The competition is accompanied by a high-calibre jury of renowned packaging design experts, including:
- Andrew Gibbs, Founder and Editor-in-Chief, The Dieline
- Brandi Parker, Head of Sustainability, Pearlfisher
- Brian Collins, Executive Creative Director, Collins
- Carin Blidholm Svensson, Creative Director and Founder, BVD
- Jennifer Patrick, Global Packaging and Brand Director, Patagonia
- Sian Sutherland, co-founder, Plastic Planet
- Ilkka Harju, Director of Packaging Services, Metsä Board
The jury will the three best zero-waste packaging designs with prizes of 10,000, 3,000 and 2,000 euros. There is an additional prize for the participating design students in the form of an internship at the Excellence Centre of the company in Finland. The closing date for submissions is 1 December 2022.
