The Swedish company Gaia BioMaterials has recently received confirmation for a European patent covering a new range of PLA-free film extrusion materials.
The patent, first filed in 2020, describes an innovative range of materials based on a unique blend of biodegradable and compostable polymers and minerals. In contrast to conventional bioplastic materials, this new compound completely omits polylactic acid (PLA).
According to Gaia BioMaterials, the patented materials are already in use in various applications such as carrier bags, fruit and vegetable bags, bin bags, and medical gowns. Further applications are currently under development.
Future prospects
With the patent's confirmation in Europe, Gaia BioMaterials is well-positioned to develop the next generation of biodegradable and compostable bioplastics. Konrad Rosén, R&D Director at GAIA, explained that the company's new research and development platform as well as its patent strategy have been successful.
The introduction of these PLA-free materials could have an impact on the packaging industry, particularly in relation to promoting compostability. Gaia BioMaterials, founded in 2015 by Åke Rosén, aims to set new industry standards with its patented technology.
