
The jury of the German Sustainability Award has announced the four finalists for the Special Packaging Award. There are also several solutions among the nominees for the Design Award that should be emphasised from a packaging perspective.
Special price packaging
In cooperation with REWE Group, the Special Packaging Award honours packaging solutions of tomorrow that, among other things Reduce plastic use, avoid waste and make it affordable for consumers are.
The nine nominated products and the companies behind them were announced back in August. It was noticeable that four out of nine nominees were reusable returnable packaging, three of which are specifically for catering businesses. This will certainly also be taken into account with the upcoming amendment to the Packaging Act in 2023, according to which catering establishments must also always offer reusable packaging.
The jury has now selected the four finalists. Two reusable to-go solutions have been shortlisted.
The winners will be announced and honoured at the German Sustainability Award ceremony on 2 December 2022 in Düsseldorf.
Reusable trend
The nominated reusable solutions include the start-up ReCup and the reusable system specially developed for the transport of pizzas Pizzcycle.
The reCup GmbH was founded around 6 years ago with the aim of reducing packaging waste from to-go drinks and was one of the first providers of returnable deposit cups in Germany.

The PIZZycle GmbH is a young start-up that started as a university project during the pandemic. Inspired by the large quantities of non-recyclable or difficult-to-recycle used pizza boxes, the team from the Offenbach University of Art and Design and Goethe University Frankfurt am Main decided to solve this problem and develop a sustainable pizza box

Resource conservation par excellence
The company was recognised for its resource-saving use of materials and the ability to get everything out of the packaging. Saier packaging technology nominated. Already honoured with a Global Packaging Award and the German Packaging Award 2021, the S-Liner Peel is a film with which residues in containers such as paint buckets or sauce tubs can be easily removed and the container can be reused without the use of water or chemicals.

The Bag-in-Box of the Sodasan Wasch- und Reinigungsmittel GmbH Finally, the new solution enables drip-free refilling from large containers into smaller bottles. With this solution, the company was able to achieve a polyethylene weight saving of 70 to 80 per cent compared to the canisters previously used.

German Sustainability Award Design
For the third time, the DNP is honouring particularly sustainable products, systems and services in the Design category.
The idea behind it: All of the nominated solutions offer consumers ecological alternatives and therefore the opportunity to contribute directly to sustainable change through their own consumption. They are already available on the German market or are about to be launched (visions).
From the perspective of the packaging industry, the following nominees should be emphasised:

Compostable shrink film from jonatura GmbH. The solution replaces fossil shrink films, which are made from LDPE or POF and are petroleum-based. The compostable and bio-based solution decomposes into biomass and CO2.

FUTURE STORIES. A solution for anyone who wants to reduce plastic waste in the bathroom but doesn't like solid soaps. FUTURE STORIES has developed a natural cosmetics powder that can simply be shaken with tap water for body and hair care in the usual gel texture.

Organoid Technologies GmbH. Since 2020, organoid natural surfaces can be produced on a pilot line as a roll product with a length of 250 linear metres. Natural fibres, flowers and leaves, for example, are processed on a 100% flax nonwoven as a carrier material. The products are planned and used in objects by interior architects and designers. Designers also create other applications such as mobile phone covers, Natural packaging or fashion applications.

STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME! The German natural cosmetics brand has relaunched its liquid products. The range is certified according to the COSMOS standard by Ecocert and has been given a new packaging design. The new bottle is made from 100% recycled PCR material and can be refilled again and again with various refills.

Yarrah Organic Petfood BV. The company was the first Dutch manufacturer of organic dog and cat food to introduce recyclable packaging. Since April 2021, all packaging for dry food has been made of monoplastic.
The winners will be honoured at the 15th German Sustainability Day at a separate awards ceremony on 1 December 2022 in Düsseldorf one day before the packaging award ceremony.
The German Sustainability Award is awarded by the German Sustainability Award Foundation in cooperation with the federal government, municipal umbrella organisations, business associations, civil society organisations and research institutions. In addition to Bundestag President Bärbel Bas, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also expected to attend the award ceremony in Düsseldorf on 2 December.
