As part of the reusable cup obligation that comes into force in January, the Burger King restaurant chain and the Recup reusable cup system have announced a cooperation. From 1 January, drinks, milkshakes and ice cream can be ordered in the Munich-based company's reusable cups in all 750 Burger King branches in Germany.

From March to November Burger King tested the use of reusable drinks cups in selected restaurants in the Cologne area as part of a reusable pilot project. The pilot project has provided important insights for the nationwide launch of an attractive reusable system, which can be easily used by guests.

"Reusable packaging must be as convenient as possible. Above all, this means that I can use and return my reusable cup at as many locations as possible. Only when a reusable cup remains in the cycle is it actually used multiple times and can bring real benefits in terms of sustainability. With Recup, we have therefore opted for the largest reusable network in Germany„, explains Daniel Polte, Public Relations Manager at Burger King Deutschland GmbH. „We are delighted, jointly promote the topic of reusable packaging and make it easier for even more people to switch from disposable to reusable in their everyday lives.“ Burger King has been equipping its kitchens with dishwashers since the middle of the year to ensure hygienic and resource-saving dishwashing directly in the restaurant.

Accessibility is the linchpin

From January, guests can enjoy all drinks, milkshakes and ice cream specialities in the fast food giant's restaurants in the Recup and with the new deposit lids. The products in the reusable cups can also be ordered at the ordering terminals or in the drive-in. A deposit of one euro is charged for each cup and deposit lid, i.e. a total deposit of two euros for a drink with a lid. Returns can be made at any Burger King restaurant and at over 16,500 Recup partners throughout Germany.

„Experience shows that distribution and accessibility are the linchpin for the acceptance of a reusable system among end consumers. We are delighted to be working with Burger King to expand the range of reusable packaging throughout Germany and to show how easy it is to save resources and reduce single-use packaging waste in everyday life,“ says Greta Mager, Public Relations Manager at Recup.
