The Circular Innovation team developed the customised solution: a volume-optimised Corrugated cardboard packaging made from virgin fibre materials with a water-based barrier coating, which is particularly greaseproof and suitable for direct contact with food. For better handling, the fish is still Wrapped in wax paper and the container sealed in an anti-fog film.
The The storage volume of empty packaging was reduced by 92 per cent and the shipping volume of filled fish packaging by 53 per cent. can be realised. This was accompanied by a reduction in CO2 footprint of the packaging material by around 60 per cent - and the new packaging now costs less than half as much.
The new packaging solution reduces storage volumes and recycling costs for fishmongers and EDEKA and REWE retailers. The Empty corrugated cardboard box can be recycled via the waste paper cycle. and the film wrap ends up in the plastic waste. Now that the conversion of the first container size has been completed, the 2.5 and 4 kg boxes will follow in the next step.
