Interzero offers a simple digital solution for assessing the recyclability of packaging and creating PPWR compliance declarations. The online tool „Check for Recycling“ is based on years of expertise from the circular economy service provider.
From 12 August 2026, companies in the EU will be required to comply with the requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). This presents many manufacturers and packers with the challenge of reviewing their products for recyclability and sustainable design.
The ‚Check for Recycling‘ tool from Interzero enables companies to assess the recyclability of their packaging and create the necessary PPWR compliance declarations. According to Article 39 of the PPWR, it will be a requirement from August onwards to have technical documentation ready for each packaging item, demonstrating compliance with PFAS limits, material composition, and recycled content, among other things. Jonathan Scheck, Team Lead Packaging Consulting at Interzero, emphasises the urgency: „It is now high time for manufacturers and putters of packaging on the market to adapt to the new requirements and to legally prove that their packaging is designed sustainably.“
Tool functionalities
‚Check for Recycling‘ offers extensive functionalities that make it easier for companies to provide the required evidence. The tool enables the creation of a database to manage compliance with the PPWR quickly, transparently, and in a traceable manner. Companies can assess recyclability and document relevant packaging data. Furthermore, the tool offers a supplier query and the generation of declarations of conformity for various recipients. The necessary documents can be created individually and sent to the relevant stakeholders.
Pilot phase and customer feedback
To optimally adapt the tool to the needs of customers, Interzero involved companies as test users in an early pilot phase. The stationery manufacturer Stabilo was one of the first to try out ‚Check for Recycling‘. Jens Weber, Teamlead Packaging Technology at Stabilo, emphasises the importance of a consistent process for packaging assessment: „For us as brand manufacturers, it's important not only to design packaging sustainably but also to document it in a regulatory compliant manner – that's exactly what we expect from ‚Check for Recycling‘.“
Long-term prospects
Interzero sees ‚Check for Recycling‘ not just as a short-term solution to meet PPWR requirements, but also as a tool for the long-term optimisation of packaging portfolio management. As a leading European circular economy service provider, the company has extensive experience in advising on packaging optimisation and also offers workshops to guide companies through the complex requirements of the PPWR. Companies that use the tool can ensure that their packaging not only meets current regulatory requirements but is also future-proofed.
