Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners are launching a pilot trial in Germany for a new generation of multipack packaging. An innovative secondary packaging format without plastic film is being trialled in selected Penny shops, using adhesive dots and a recyclable cardboard handle.
The new concept replaces the previous shrink film for large PET multipacks (6 × 1.25 litres) with spot-applied adhesives that hold the bottles together. A sturdy cardboard handle makes it easier to carry and is fully recyclable. According to the company, the design was tested extensively for stability and portability. The aim of the pilot project is to reduce packaging waste and increase recyclability.
The test phase is intended to provide information on the practicality and acceptance of the solution. Consumers will receive simple instructions on how to separate the bottles in the market. The concept complements Coca-Cola's existing portfolio of alternative secondary packaging in Europe, which already includes KeelClip, LitePacTop and CanCollar.
Part of a comprehensive sustainability strategy
The pilot trial is part of the company-wide endeavours to reduce the ecological footprint of packaging. With the gradual introduction of such innovative formats, Coca-Cola is responding to increasing regulatory requirements and consumer demands for less plastic in everyday life.
