As part of a strategic reorganisation, Smurfit Westrock is planning to close two production sites in Germany and at the same time invest in modern processing technology for corrugated board packaging.
Smurfit Westrock, which claims to be the world's largest provider of paper-based packaging solutions, is adjusting its site structure in north and south-west Germany. As part of the new strategy, the plants in Lübbecke and Hanau are to be closed. In future, production will be distributed to larger plants in the region, where sufficient capacity is already available.
With these measures, the company is responding to changing market conditions in Germany and is pursuing the goal of reducing fixed costs, increasing productivity and at the same time investing in innovative solutions for corrugated packaging.
Focus on efficiency and innovation
In parallel with the consolidation, major investments are being made in new processing lines in both regions, according to reports. Smurfit Westrock intends to expand its range to include high-quality printed die-cut packaging. These product solutions are of growing importance, particularly in the e-commerce sector and for customers with strong brands.
Socially responsible implementation planned
The company management informed the works councils about the closure plans on 28 April 2025. According to HR Director Stephan Kunze, great importance is attached to a socially responsible implementation. The aim is to offer all affected employees new prospects within the company. This includes reconciliation of interests and social plans, which are currently being coordinated with the employee representatives.
At the same time, the management expresses its regret about the impact on employees and their families.
